Synopsis

Three years working brutal overseas contracts. Every month, I sent $18,000 home without fail. I even bought the house outright so my wife and daughter would never have to struggle. Then I came home early for my daughter’s sixth birthday. My fingerprint no longer opened the door. Before I could understand why, a security guard raised a baton at me—and a filthy, starving little girl threw herself in front of it. “Don’t hit my daddy!” It was my daughter. In the three years I’d been gone, she had been forced to sleep in the dog run, survive on scraps, and take beatings whenever she refused to call another man “Daddy.” My wife hadn’t just replaced me. She had legally married someone else. The marriage certificate she gave me eight years ago was fake, my name had been removed from the deed of the house I paid for, and now she was telling everyone I was her unstable, dangerous ex. She had even prepared the paperwork to have me committed. They looked at my worn clothes and thought I had come home with nothing. They had no idea what I really did overseas. And they definitely had no idea who would answer when I finally made one phone call. They called me crazy. Soon, they were going to wish that was all I was.
