Synopsis

There’s a semi-professional soccer team here: Rio Cross FC. The players are ordinary people: veterans, auto mechanics, food delivery drivers, warehouse workers, community college students, and children from immigrant families. Their only home field is an old neighborhood soccer field called The Border Yard. This field embodies the youth and dignity of the entire small town. But real estate tycoon Victor Kane wants to buy the land and turn it into a high-end commercial district. If the team fails to win the national amateur championship qualifier within 30 days, the field will be demolished. The protagonist, Jack Mercer, 38, was once the captain of a top-tier professional soccer team. Eight years ago, he was suspended following a “locker room altercation” and branded a “violent madman” by the media. In reality, he had taken the fall to protect a younger teammate. Now, he has returned to this small border town and once again donned the captain’s armband. He intends to lead a group of underdog players—whom no one believes in—to defeat the capital’s professional teams, save the field, and clear his name.
