Synopsis

Working in the city, David and Sarah Mercer entrust their daughter, Lucy, to grandmother Patricia and uncle Caleb in the countryside. Favoring boys, Patricia brutally abuses Lucy, starving her and spending her allowance on grandson Ethan's lavish birthday. Left outside in freezing weather, Lucy catches a high fever and dies after Patricia denies her medical care. Patricia and Caleb attempt to frame a neighbor and bribe the village doctor, but a city doctor exposes the truth. David severs ties with his mother and leaves the site of the tragedy with his wife, haunted by guilt.
