PAST DUE: A Wife's Reckoning

Synopsis

For twelve years, Olivia Bennett has played the perfect wife — the quiet backbone behind her husband Trevor Reynolds's never-quite-launched career. When the bills pile up again, she pawns the last gold bracelet her late mother left her. “For your launch. I believe in you.” Trevor takes the money straight to Celeste Vance — a glamorous mistress in pomegranate-red silk, the woman he has been spoiling with Olivia's sacrifices. Olivia finds the bright-orange false eyelash on his collar on a Tuesday. She does not scream. That night, lying beside the husband who smells like another woman, she whispers into the dark: “I hope you enjoyed your last quiet night.” What follows is not a tantrum. It is an operation. The new Olivia trails her husband through Manhattan, infiltrates the salon where Celeste brags about “his pathetic wife,” and moves every deed and account into airtight legal cages one step ahead of his escape flight. The trap closes at their tenth-anniversary dinner. Three plates, one cornered husband, one diamond bracelet bought with the gold of his wife's dead mother. Olivia lifts her glass: “To honesty, and to secrets that don't keep.” When Trevor finally believes he has won, the key will not turn. The rooms are empty. The deed is paper. And from somewhere deeper in the dark, footsteps come down the stairs.
