Synopsis

Mia, the neglected youngest daughter of a Manhattan family of five, has grown up on hand-me-downs and silence. When she earns a perfect SAT score, her mother's promised reward—a $28 long-staple cotton towel embroidered with two little reindeer—is dismissed as "too expensive," even as her sister Ava's $2,800 designer gown is bought without a second thought. Later, falsely accused of stealing $3,800, Mia transfers the money back with dignity and walks away from the family that never once stood by her. With the help of her college counselor, Mr. Harris, she boards a train carrying only her admission letter and a torn family photo. Years later, when her mother finally appears with the long-promised towel begging forgiveness, Mia calmly refuses: a broken cup, once glued, still shows its cracks. This is a story about a girl who stopped waiting for love and learned to pay for her own life, on her own terms.
